Roger Federer claims his 7th Wimbledon championship, and his 17th major title.
Federer defeated a spiritual Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 ensuring his 7th Wimbledon title. This victory will ensure Federer reclaims the number 1 ranking for a further few weeks, in that time it is expected that he will equal and exceed Pete Sampras’ record for amount of weeks ranked at number 1.
Andy Murray came out of the blocks and played better in the opening exchanges, however, as the game wore on, Federer became more confident and the inevitable was soon realised, as he showed his superior qualities thereafter.
Murray can take heart from his performance, it was a spiritual one, and capped with his emotional speech at the end, it showed that he had the utmost care for the game of tennis. One thing Murray can take from this is that he has already earned a place in the history books; the first Briton to play in a Wimbledon final since Bunny Austin in the late 1930’s.
In the midst of his emotions, he managed to utter the words;
“I’m getting closer”
And rightly so, he can now take the 2012 Wimbledon final as part of his ever steep learning curve that may help Andy reach that elusive Grand Slam.
